Some aspects of statistical mechanics that are particularly important for computer simulation approaches are recalled. Using Ising and classical Heisenberg models as examples, various statistical ensembles and appropriate thermodynamic potentials are introduced, and concepts such as Legendre transformations between ensembles and the thermodynamic integration method to obtain the entropy are mentioned. Stress transfer mechanism investigation in hybrid steel trussed-concrete beams by push-out tests

Abstract Results of push-out tests carried out on Hybrid Steel Trussed–Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) before and after the concrete casting are presented and interpreted. Firstly, in order to check the ability of weldings before casting, tensile tests were performed on specimens reproducing different types of welded joints. Simplified design formulae were used to predict their ultimate strength. Multicellular tumor spheroids: an underestimated tool is catching up again.

The present article highlights the rationale, potential and flexibility of tumor spheroid mono- and cocultures for implementation into state of the art anti-cancer therapy test platforms. Unlike classical monolayer-based models, spheroids strikingly mirror the 3D cellular context and therapeutically relevant pathophysiological gradients of in vivo tumors. Some concepts for standardization and automation of spheroid culturing, monitoring and analysis are discussed, and the challenges to define the most convenient analytical endpoints for therapy testing are outlined. Multiple-diameter laterals reduce the total cost in microirrigation systems, however, the length of each sublateral should be determined carefully to assure appro-priate performance of emitter flow rates. Analytical Modeling of the Maximum Power Point with Series Resistance

This paper presents new analytical expressions for the maximum power point voltage, current, and power that have an explicit dependence on the series resistance. An explicit expression that relates the series resistance to well-known solar cell parameters was also derived. The range of the validity of the model, as well as the mathematical assumptions taken to derive it are explained and discussed. This dataset is a synthesis of published nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from permafrost-affected soils in Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine permafrost regions. The data includes mean N2O flux rates measured under field (in situ) conditions and in intact plant-soil systems (mesocosms) under near-field conditions. Analytical design of nonlinear optical loop mirrors for fiber-optic communication systems

International audience; We propose an easy and efficient method for analytically designing nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) for fiber-optic communication systems. This analytical design is based on a Taylor series expansion of the transfer function of the NOLM, from which highly stable dynamical regimes can be readily obtained for any desired pulse parameters. We present numerical simulations showing dramatically improved performances in a 160 Gb/s transmission system that incorporates the NOLMs designed analytically.

Experimental Investigation of the Shear Response of Precast Steel-Concrete Trussed Beams

The results of an experimental campaign of three-point bending tests on precast composite beams, named hybrid steel-trussed concrete beams (HSTCBs), are provided. HSTCBs are typically constituted by a precast steel truss embedded in a block of concrete cast in place. Two series of specimens were manufactured, designed such that shear failure would occur, and tested under positive and negative bending moment. The experimental results obtained showed that fragile shear failure occurred in almost all cases, evidencing the crisis of the compressed concrete strut involved in the collapse mechanism.
